Stan Collymore has questioned whether Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers will get the necessary funds to make the ‘big changes’ he hopes to see.
The foxes have not managed to push from back-to-back fifth places. After qualifying for Europe in the last two campaigns, they are currently down among the Premier League players. With just seven top wins all season, the East Midlanders are in 10th place after taking 26 points.
They have games in hand at most clubs around them due to Covid-related postponements. But they have not shown the necessary consequence of pushing for a place back among the elite.
Last season’s FA Cup final triumph over Chelsea proved they could mix it with the best. Measure Sunday 4-1 exit in fourth round to Championship Nottingham Forest sounded the alarm bells in the club.
That got Rodgers to target his team in public. He told reporters that “many of these players are not top players”.
And the Northern Irishman added: “There are a lot of these players, between now and the end of the season, who have to prove that they are still worthy to be here. Because we’ve seen it for a while now.”
The former Liverpool boss had already admitted that new faces would be needed at the end of the season.
“For us, our focus is very much on the summer window,” he said. “We know we have to make big changes to freshen up the squad, and planning is well underway for that.”
Rodger’s rebuilding may not happen
Leicester’s incredible Premier League title triumph in 2015-2016 raised the bar at the club. Although it is unlikely to happen again, they have become a force to be reckoned with in England’s top division.
But Collymore is unsure whether the money will be made available to Rodgers to keep the momentum going.
“The way he talked about the team being together for three years, he told the club’s owners that he needs a rebuild,” he said. The mirror.
“But Leicester are not the kind of club that gives their manager £ 200 million. And they have just invested a lot in the training ground and the academy.”
And the ex-Forest and Leicester striker is worried about the standard of possible incoming players.
“His team lacked senior players without Kasper Schmeichel, Jamie Vardy and Marc Albrighton to start and it will still cost £ 100 million to pick up three more who come in when rested or injured and I’m not sure they will give him that, ”he added.
