Group H of the Champions League is open after Manchester United suffered a 3-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
PSG opened the scoring in the sixth minute, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar combined long before the latter finished coldly at the near post.
United tied shortly after half an hour after Marcus Rashford’s shot from the edge of the box was aimed at his own goal by Danilo Pereira.
Both sides hit the crossbar in the second half, first Edinson Cavani with a fabulous chip and then Marquinhos with a header, before Marquinhos gave the visitors the lead, pushing home from a corner.
Moments after PSG’s second goal, Fred received his marching orders after he was shown a second yellow for a challenge to Ander Herrera.
Neymar put the game out of question in the later stages, finishing a play that had started within his own half with superb skill.
Let’s get into some player rankings.
David de Gea (GK) – 6/10 – Produced a fantastic spikey low save to keep Bakker out in the second half. He could do little with any of PSG’s goals.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) – 7/10 – Had to deal with Mbappé in the first half and Neymar in the second, but the world-class pair rarely got over him.
Victor Lindelof (CB) – 6/10 – Handled well with Kean but struggled once PSG rose to two at the top with Neymar and Mbappé.
Harry Maguire (CB) – 6/10 – He faced the threat from Kean, but was completely sold out by Neymar’s sublime ability in preparation for PSG’s third.
Alex Telles (LB) – 6/10 – Relatively solid on defense, he advanced well in the first half and made a couple of dangerous deliveries from set pieces.
Scott McTominay (DM) – 6/10 – Produced an impressive sliding tackle to strip Neymar in the middle line at half time, causing the clash of both.
Fred (DM) – 4/10 – He was lucky not to be sent off after appearing for a Paredes header, but escaped with just a yellow after the referee checked the VAR monitor. It was unfortunate to be sent off after it was deemed that he had caught Herrera late, when he had actually won the ball.
Bruno Fernandes (AM) – 5/10 – Linked well with Rashford to create United’s first real opening in the first half. He was in and out of the game, not as influential as usual.
Marcus Rashford (RW) – 6/10 – Combined well with Fernandes on the edge of the PSG area to record United’s first attempt in the first half. His goal-bound effort diverted from Danilo to tie United.
Edinson Cavani (ST) – 7/10 – Combined superbly with Rashford in the second half in building a golden second chance for Martial, choosing the United academy product with a lovely back heel. He hit the crossbar with a sublimely executed chip.
Anthony Martial (LW) – 6/10 – Opened a great opportunity from close up early in the second half after Rashford attacked him.
Paul Pogba – 6/10
Donny van de Beek – 5/10
Mason Greenwood – 5/10
Odion Ighalo – N / A
Keylor Navas (GK) – 6/10 – Made a couple of comfortable saves to frustrate Rashford and Martial in the first half. He couldn’t do anything against United’s goal.
Alessandro Florenzi (RB) – 7/10 – Whipped in a tremendous delivery in the opening bars of the first half that Neymar was inches away from turning home, and another five minutes before the break.
Marquinhos (CB) – 8/10 – Attacked Martial’s effort in the second half, producing a great block to prevent United from taking the lead. He hit the crossbar with a header in the second half before finding the net with a close-range effort from a corner.
Presnel Kimpembe (CB) – 7/10 – Made a vital interception to prevent Fernandes from passing Rashford in the second half as United were three on three.
Abdou Diallo (LB) – 6/10 – Solid defensively and advanced dangerously, particularly in the first half.
Danilo Pereira (DM) – 6/10 He inadvertently pushed Rashford’s effort toward his own goal with one leg extended. He fell on defense to make a back three when PSG switched systems in the second half. Cleverly cleaned on the back numerous times.
Marco Verratti (CM) – 6/10 – Ruthlessly efficient in possession, he flew into off-possession challenges.
Leandro Paredes (CM) – 5/10 – I enjoyed a real battle with Fred in the middle of the park. He probably had more encounters with the United midfielder than time with the ball. It was replaced after an hour.
Neymar (DT) – 10/8 – He opened the scoring with a very well executed close to the post after having skillfully linked with Mbappé. He started to get a little smug after receiving a strong challenge from McTominay. He concluded the victory with a close-range effort, finishing the move that began with exquisite skill.
Moise Kean (ST) – 5/10 – He barely saw the ball and Maguire and Lindelof kept him very quiet. He was substituted just after the hour mark.
Kylian Mbappé (FW) – 6/10 – Matched well with Neymar in preparation for PSG’s opener, before his deviant effort fell into the Brazilian’s path. He was in and out of the game. I should have laid the game on the bed while the clock ticked, but it flashed with effort.
Ander Herrera – 6/10
Mitchel Bakker – 5/10
Thilo Kehrer – 5/10
Rafinha – 5/10
Angel Di Maria – N / A
Idrissa Gueye – N / A
