The Chennaiyin expert has called the 1-4 loss to Hyderabad the worst of his campaign …

Chennaiyin FC’s lack of effectiveness in front of goal is the factor that has hurt them the most in the first half of the 2020-21 Indian Super League (ISL) season, head coach Csaba Laszlo feels.

As the Marina Machans Prepare to face Odisha FC, days after playing a goalless draw against the same rival, the Romanian-born manager is desperate for three points. Even in that goalless draw, Chennaiyin was guilty of rejecting a number of scoring chances.

He said: “I’m not worried about the draw (close matches). Both teams need three points. They all need wins, as in our situation. You saw the game between the two teams (Mumbai City and ATK Mohun Bagan) from the top of the table yesterday and our best games were against these teams, “he added.

Chennaiyin squandered a host of chances in their 1-2 loss to Mumbai City and held ATK Mohun Bagan to a 0-0 draw. Naturally, his scoring has been Laszlo’s biggest concern.

“I don’t mean to say that we created the most chances in the league, but somehow we didn’t score enough goals. If you don’t score goals, it’s very difficult to win games. You can’t always just defend and hope to be without errors at the back. We are organized in the rear but hopefully we mark the occasions that we create ”, he stressed.

Chennaiyin have also conceded a good number of set pieces goals and are currently in eighth place with 11 points from 10 games.

“We didn’t concede many goals in open play. We have reorganized our form and are better organized now. East Bengal scored two goals from the corners (2-2 draw) and Mumbai City two goals from indirect set pieces. All teams can improve and we are also improving.

Chennaiyin vs Odisha

“We had to reorganize the team in the last game (against Odisha) because our captain had a bad injury. In the next 10 games we have to be in a different form and we have to continue like this,” the former Dundee United coach posted.

They have also lost captain Rafael Crivellaro, their main creative force, to injury for the remainder of the season. Laszlo further updated that Crivellaro’s replacement at Manuel Lanzarote is expected to join the camp in about three weeks and offered an assessment of his team midway through the season.

“In summary, our strategy and tactics have been good. We have not mastered all the games, but mostly we have been active (creating opportunities) in the games. Out of 10 games, we have a very bad game against Hyderabad.

“I think we also feature players like Deepak (Tangri) and [Rahim] Ali like these are players who haven’t played much in the ISL. The bad thing is that with Rafa’s injury we not only lost the captain but also a leader, but it is the goal that has to be better. I hope that the next part of the season is more positive for us, “he concluded.
