Pickett in terms of hand size: I played on Pitt

MOBILE, Ala. – Kenny Pickett knew what was coming.

Pickett, one of the best quarterback prospects in this year’s NFL Draft, acknowledged questions about his hand size one day after choosing not to have his throwing hand measured as part of the Senior Bowl weigh-in.

The former University of Pittsburgh quarterback said he will improve his hand mobility through stretches ahead of this month’s NFL scout combination, where he will get an official measurement. He also cited his experience playing in the “hard weather” of Pittsburgh as proof that his hand size will not be an issue at the next level.

“I think it’s like the number one thing for quarterbacks in the draft process every year is hand size,” Pickett said Tuesday. “The good news is, I’m playing in Pittsburgh. Anyone who’s been to Pittsburgh knows it’s not the best place to play in October, November.

“So I’ve had experience playing in bad weather and I did not measure this week. I just want to give as much measurement as I can. I work with mobility things.”

Pickett, a Heisman Trophy finalist and winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award last season, plays on the national team at this week’s Senior Bowl. He went through four hours of interviews Monday with NFL teams and then spent another hour with teams Tuesday morning before training.

Pickett’s draft share improved dramatically in 2021 after returning to school based on advice from Senior Bowls CEO Jim Nagy, who told Pickett he would have been a “Day 3 player” if he had joined the draft last year.

Pickett is the No. 16 senior player on ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.’s most recent Big Board and the best quarterback, while he is rated as the No. 20 senior player by ESPN’s Todd McShay, who is only one spot as head of Liberty quarterback Malik Willis.

“Kenny has got himself in a good position in this draft process right now,” Nagy said. “I know that just the way he’s connected and spending time around him – and the kind of guy he’s talking to the guys at Manning Camp and has been around him, the guys at Pitt – he’s going to crush that process.

“I think he’s already started in the interviews right now. He has a really cool way about him, reminds me a little bit [Joe] Burrow when I got to know Joe through this process with the way guys attracted him. He’s a leader, it’s easy for him. “

Pickett passed 12,303 yards and 81 touchdowns in his career with the Panthers. He ended his college career with the most 300-yard passing (16) and most 400-yard passing (5) in school history.

Pittsburgh went 32-17 in the games Pickett started and won last season’s ACC championship game over Wake Forest as Pickett passed 253 yards and two touchdowns left with a 58-yard touchdown run.

“I think everyone knows the kind of year I’ve just had, and it was very different from the previous three years,” Pickett said. “So I just want to show that playing at a high level in 13 games is not a kind of luck. I can be the same guy every week and I want to be the same guy now, down here on Mobile and just show consistency . “
