The New England Patriots filed a waiver for quarterback / receiver Malcolm Perry and stole him from the Miami Dolphins.
In Week 1, the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins play at Gillette Stadium. Maybe the home team will have an advantage in more ways than one.
On Wednesday, teams were assigned to players who were dropped the day before, as the clubs had to cut down to 53 players on each list. The Dolphins went ahead and gave up quarterback / receiver Malcolm Perry, a star during his collegiate days at the Navy.
New England, always looking for an edge, claimed Perry, making him an extra receiver and potential backup for rookie Mac Jones after veterans Brian Hoyer and Cam Newton were released.
The Patriots claimed Malcolm Perry away from the Dolphins
Why not for New England and head coach Bill Belichick? The Patriots can pump Perry for information, and if they like what they see over the next few weeks, he might be working on the field in a special team role.
In addition, Belichick is probably somewhat familiar with Perry because Belichick went to the Navy, the same place that his new player made himself noticed.
As a rookie receiver, Perry played in nine games and caught nine passes in 92 yards including a touchdown. For Midshipmen, Perry started in three seasons and ran for 2,017 yards as a senior, while totaling only 113 passing attempts for his career in the election-based scheme.
