With a brief injury at Kansas City Chiefs training camp, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes gave fans an unwarranted scare.

Of course, any long-term injury to Mahomes would be disastrous for Kansas City’s AFC West chances. A crowded division with the likes of Justin Herbert’s Chargers, Derek Carr’s Raiders and Russell Wilson’s Broncos wouldn’t look the same without Mahomes.

Around noon Tuesday, Mahomes hobbled off the practice field, causing Chiefs fans to hold their collective breaths.

Fortunately, after a brief examination, Mahomes was okay, according to head coach Andy Reid.

If anything, Mahome’s injury speaks to the fragility of training camp. After an entire offseason of personal grooming, anything can happen, even for players on a strict, no-contact schedule.

With that scare from Mahomes quickly dispelled, he can focus forward on the task at hand – winning a crowded AFC West and making another run at Super Bowl glory.

Mahomes lost his star wide receiver Tyreek Hill last season when Brett Veach deemed him replaceable. Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins, where he promptly signed an expensive long-term contract.

KC used some of that money to sign Hill in a trade-by-committee approach, bringing in wideouts like Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Skyy Moore and other rookie contributors could also help.
