Patrick Mahomes got the news to the world that Kansas City will actually be one of 16 host cities in North America for the World Cup bid in 2026, which is shared between Canada, Mexico and the USA.

It was only fitting that Kansas City Chiefs starter quarterback Patrick Mahomes got to share the news that his adopted hometown, Kansas City, will be one of 16 host cities during the 2026 World Cup.

Although Kansas City is one of the smallest major cities among the three host states that received a bid (Canada, Mexico, USA), it would have been most embarrassing if the Midwestern metropolis did not get one. It is clear that FIFA went after cities with fantastic stadium infrastructure as well as a rich football tradition. Kansas City absolutely checked that both the big boxes disappeared.

Here is Mahomes’ message revealing that KC got the bid as one of six host cities in the central region.

Patrick Mahomes shares with the world Kansas City will host the World Cup in 2026

Kansas City is one of 11 U.S. cities that received a bid: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York (New Jersey), Philadelphia, San Francisco (Bay Area) and Seattle. All 11 cities have NFL stadiums capable of hosting World Cup matches, as well as a strong football history on the MLS side. Fortunately, Kansas City was included in this grouping.

Even though Sporting KC plays over in KCK, Arrowhead Stadium will shake. The Power and Light District will go bananas throughout the event. But what’s so important here is that the legacy of Lamar Hunt lives triumphantly with Kansas City, as well as his hometown of Dallas getting bids. The US Open Cup bears the name of the late Chiefs owner. Of course, Kansas City came in!

In the end, this is an absolutely fantastic opportunity for Kansas City. It is the lone city in the Midwestern footprint that received a World Cup bid. Other big cities like Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus and the twin cities might have been in the mix, but they are all missing something. While Kansas City will never host a Super Bowl, this is about as big as it will be for the city, along with the 2023 NFL Draft.

Mahomes was not the only athlete to announce a city’s bid, but his message to Kansas City spoke volumes.
