Jean-Philippe Mateta, signed by Crystal Palace on loan from Mainz in the January transfer window, scored a surprising first Premier League goal against Brighton on Monday Night Football.
Palace is not in imminent danger of being dragged into a relegation battle, but reinforcing Roy Hodgson in January will always be an effective way to ensure that it remains that way.
At Jean-Philippe Mateta, although only on loan from Mainz, Hodgson’s attacking options were strengthened, and if this goal he scored against Brighton tonight is something to go through, it’s a good match.
There didn’t seem to be any plausible way that Mateta could deflect this ball to the back of the net from the position he was in, but a brilliant inspiration from the Frenchman saw him hit the keeper with a back heel.
A goal from Mateta’s contender of the season, and what a night to score it, from Palace’s perspective!
What an end
