Leeds United have had a rather churning holiday period in which they have been praised and criticized in equal measure.

So a transfer window might be exactly what they need to calm down a bit.

Which is the word?

Leeds’ 1-0 win over Burnley was a resolute display that demonstrated the enormous character of Marcelo Bielsa’s team. They bounced back from a 6-2 hit against Manchester United with that win before demolishing West Brom 5-0.

However, their insistence on playing attacking football against the greats meant they relished defeat once again against the Spurs.

Maybe they could use a striker who can keep things going and keep the play going to make that work? Well, in their last transfer target they were able to find exactly that.

Should Leeds sign Mateta?

According to Football InsiderLeeds are interested in signing Mainz’s towering forward Jean-Philippe-Mateta.

Victor Orta and his recruitment team are said to be tracking down the Frenchman who is valued at £ 13.5 million via Transfer market.

He has appeared on the radar of several Premier League clubs, so United will have to attack quickly if they want him on Elland Road.

Disaster for Orta

Mateta is undoubtedly a striking player. Standing in a colossal 6ft 4, he knows how to win a head butt and get afloat. He also knows how to score goals.

The 23-year-old has scored seven times in 14 Bundesliga departures this season, but that doesn’t necessarily bode well.

After all, a number of forwards have come to English football from Germany in recent years and have not really made it through the grade.

You just need to see the impact Sebastien Haller has had since joining West Ham from Frankfurt to £ 45 million. The French compatriot found the net in just 14 times in 53 outings.

An even better example can be found with Joelinton. Signed by £ 40 million, has beaten a Premier League goalkeeper alone Three occasions.

Both came to England after impressive campaigns where they both scored double figures but they have clearly found life here much more challenging.

Of course, Mateta may have better adaptability, but in terms of physical presence, he is very similar to Haller and Joelinton.

Radrizzani will have every right to be furious if he spends his money on the Mainz attacker. Leeds can surely do better.

And in other news, Leeds eye plummets over a £ 16k-p / w flop, Orta could repeat his Jean-Kevin Augustin howl …
