The German tactician says that conditions in Gaborone, where they played a Caf Confederation Cup qualifier, were tough, leading to further injuries.
Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer hopes the next few days before Saturday will give his injured players time to recover before hosting the Jwaneng Galaxy in a Caf Confederation Cup second leg.
The Pirates sent off the Galaxy 3-0 to claim a crucial away win and were already losing key players like forwards Thembinkosi Lorch and Frank Mhango, as well as defender Ntsikelelo Nyauza.
But the trip to Botswana saw the Pirates return home with new concerns about their fitness, and despite welcoming their opponents on Saturday enjoying the lead in the two-legged tie, Zinnbauer was concerned about the situation of his team.
“Yes, we have to see what happens now. We have injured players, as you saw, the weather was very hot and both teams struggled a bit in their conditioning, ”Zinnbauer told the media.
“But our team was very good, now we have recovery days and we need these recovery days after having had many games in the last weeks. Now it is important to recover and then begin [preparing] and see what happens to the next game, with the players that are available.
“I hope Lorch and other players return and we can improve the next start to win, I hope. We need a good game, I know the rival is good, so we have full concentration for next Saturday.
The German refuses to feel comfortable despite the 3-0 away win, and says the competition is not over yet as they now prepare to protect their lead at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
“You know that in football you have a goal ahead and the players think that the game is over. But the game is not over, it is starting with the second half, “added Zinnbauer.
“The result is important and when we have opportunities we can score more goals, it is important that you do so. We have three goals now but we have the second leg and we have to focus on the next game on Saturday. If we give the same performance, then we have one. good opportunity [to qualify] for the next round.
“In the first 15 minutes we had a lot of chances to score, but their goalkeeper was very good today. Minute by minute we get closer to the first goal. I’m happy that we score from set pieces against an opponent with tall players.
“The second half was the same, we controlled the game, we dominated and we had more chances to score more goals. I think our rivals had one or two chances to score, but at the end of the day we deserved this victory.”
