Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that both Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani suffered injuries during Manchester United’s 3-1 win over West Ham on Saturday.
United trailed 1-0 at halftime before Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford were introduced. Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Rashford scored the goals to secure a 3-1 victory, with the result moving the Red Devils to fifth place, just three points behind leading Chelsea.
However, it was not all good news. At halftime, Cavani retired, while Martial stopped with a problem early in the second half.
Speaking after the victory, Solskjaer said MUTV: “We lost Anthony and Edinson. Hopefully they weren’t too bad, but they couldn’t continue today. There’s a game on Tuesday, but that’s probably the season this year.
“There will be some games that we will have to do without players and I am glad that we have the substitutes that we have. They are not bad, hopefully. We will do scans and hopefully they will be available soon.”
His injuries come on the eve of United’s biggest game of the season against RB Leipzig. Heading into their final game of the Champions League group stage, United know that avoiding defeat to Julian Nagelsmann’s side would guarantee qualification to the round of 16.
Solskjaer said he hoped his win over the Hammers would give them momentum for Tuesday’s game.
“It is a brilliant week. We are looking forward to it. It is a good start.”
Cavani and Martial will not be the only players missing for the Leipzig match. David de Gea is also struggling to stay fit and could miss out, while Luke Shaw remains on the sidelines with a hamstring problem.
