BEREA, Ohio – Cleveland Brown coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday that he has already ruled out Brown wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. from playing this weekend against the Houston Texans.

Stefanski said Beckham would continue to practice on a limited basis and had suffered no setbacks as he continues to work his way back from left knee injury.

“But it felt like it made more sense to have clarity during the week from a game planning standpoint,” Stefanski added, making the call in advance.

Beckham’s status for Sunday’s season opener in Kansas City came to a decision on playing time. Beckham sprinted onto the pitch and warmed up two hours before the match while testing his knee. But in the end, he was judged inactive.

“He pushed to get there, just did not feel he could play a significant number of snaps,” Stefanski said. “I just felt like this this week, the cautious thing to do was to let them others [receivers] get all these reps and let’s plan the game accordingly. “

Stefanski said he would not fall into a pattern where Beckham’s playing status became a weekly decision in playing time, just as it was Sunday.

“With Odell, we just have to make sure we stay smart about it, and listen to him, he knows his body better than anyone,” Stefanski said. “And then we make the decision that is right for him and the team.”

Beckham underwent knee surgery after suffering a torn ACL in Week 7 last season.
