Liverpool are preparing for another round of contract negotiations after Jurgen Klopp ruled out retirement for Reds general James Milner.

Liverpool opted for a relatively quiet summer window last year when Ibrahima Konate became the only big arrival. Instead, the Reds hierarchy distributed their funds to new contracts for several of their established stars.

In fact, people like Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk, Fabinho and Andy Robertson all wrote new terms in 2021. But only half of the job was completed.

The fabled front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are all out of contract in the summer of 2023. Given Diogo Jota’s progress and Luis Diaz’s arrival, one or more of the trio could leave over the next 17 months .

But a more pressing concern concerns midfielder James Milner. The 36-year-old has been a skilled and reliable player for much of his Liverpool career, but will be a free agent when the season ends.

Milner’s role has diminished in recent seasons. In fact, his 15 league games this season have only generated 609 minutes of action. Milner has mainly been used off the bench in the final stages of the fights to help see a win.

James Milner will “definitely” not retire – Klopp

However, the leadership and experience he provides cannot be underestimated. And according to Klopp, Liverpool have plans on offer to offer a new contract.

That would get Milner to enter his 20th season as a professional and rule out the possibility of retirement. In Klopp’s words, there is “no chance” that the veteran will hang up his boots yet.

“Talks will take place with Milly. We’ll see,” Klopp said recently (via Daily Mail).

“There’s no way he’s retiring next year. He’s desperate to play. I understand that. Life after football is much longer than your career, so it makes sense to extend the game for as long as you can. , it’s better than other things.

“Milly also wants to feel good after his career, but he obviously loves what he does and he will definitely play football next year.”

There has always been speculation that Milner could return to the boys’ club Leeds United after leaving Liverpool. But so far, it looks like Milner’s future remains on Merseyside.

Where’s Next to Declan Rice? Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal?

Simeone turns on the Liverpool goal

Meanwhile, Liverpool have been given a ‘transfer boost’ after Diego Simeone shot back at the curious comments from transfer target Joao Felix.

Felix’s latest comments when describing Atletico’s matches raised eyebrows last week. The Portuguese forward told Athletic: “I think we all know what the problem is [with the team]I will not say that, however. “

The cryptic comment has predictably gone down like a lead balloon at the no-nonsense Simeone. When Simeone was asked for an answer ahead of their chaotic 4-3 victory over Getafe on Saturday, Simeone fought back (via Daily Mail): “About what Joao said, you can ask him.

“I work for the team. If he’s aware of the problem, it’s good to know. “

Given Liverpool signing Luis Diaz in January, one can expect their transfer efforts next summer to focus on different areas. But all three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are out of contract in 2023.

The trio will all be over 30 when next season begins. It is not inconceivable that Liverpool’s frugal American owners will choose to move on from one or more of the aging stars.

Felix would represent something of a gamble for Klopp’s side. Thought Liverpool Echo insists they may now be on ‘red alert’ with the chances of an Atletico exit now ‘increased’.
