SEATTLE – San Francisco 49ers running back Trenton Cannon left Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks with a concussion after a frightening collision at the opening kickoff of the game.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said after the 49ers’ loss that Cannon, who was in stable condition, would spend the night in a hospital for observation, but that he had been cleared of other injuries besides the concussion.

Cannon, who is one of San Francisco’s primary special teams players, chased Seahawks returning DeeJay Dallas as he collided with 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga. At the game, Cannon tried to tackle Dallas from one side as Hufanga converged from the other.

Both Cannon and Hufanga missed Dallas, and Hufanga’s left thigh hit Cannon in the head as his neck bent backwards. Cannon stayed on the field for a few minutes as medical staff took care of him. After tightening Cannon’s neck, doctors removed his face mask and he was loaded into an ambulance and taken away for further evaluation.

Shortly after, Cannon was ruled out for the rest of the fight due to a concussion.

“Concussion is very worrying, but all the things you were really worried about, he was cleared,” Shanahan said. “So he remembers it all. Just the concussion, they will hold him overnight for it.”
