In a showdown between two teams battling at opposite ends of the League Two table, Grimsby vs. Newport will take place at Blundell Park on Tuesday night.

Starting with the hosts, and finally falling to a 2-1 loss at Colchester on Saturday night, Grimsby is in the midst of a hugely worrisome streak of slowness. In freefall on the League Two table and looking firmly over his shoulder towards the drop zone, Ian Holloway’s men have lost six of their last seven appearances in all formats and some at Blundell Park fear his team may lose their Football League status once again this season. With his recent woes highlighted by a 3-1 drumming against National League team Dagenham & Redbridge when they crashed in the FA Cup last month, the former Blackpool boss has seen his team continue to show some pretty glaring problems in the back part. Including being beaten by four by Exeter last week, Grimsby has conceded more than 2.5 goals in five of his last seven outings.

As for the visitors, while Grimsby could find himself struggling at the bottom of the League Two table, Newport could find himself leading the race at the other end. With what was a well deserved 2-1 win against Morecambe last time out, the Welsh team have a one-point buffer at the top of the table and are seen as a leading pick to move up to England’s third tier this season. Also managing to book an FA Cup showdown against Premier League Brighton thanks to a resounding 3-0 win against Salford City, Newport is enjoying a five-game unbeaten streak in all competitions. Given that the mood at Michael Flynn’s camp is likely to be very high heading into Tuesday’s trip to Blundell Park, we are supporting midweek guests to extend their reservation at the top of the table.
