Newcastle United fans could have been forgiven for believing their team was already on the beach, but instead of giving in, their team broke into battle against Arsenal earlier in the week with a really strong performance.
They controlled large parts of the game and eventually came out on top with a comprehensive 2-0 win.
Arsenal offered absolutely nothing in this match except apathy, weakness on the ball and real question marks over what their future is going to look like. The standard excuse that this is a small team is not really going to fly much further, and in the summer transfer window they have to seriously consider a few big changes – because the mentality is far away.
A bright Magpies future
Newcastle could quite easily end the campaign in the top half of the table, but even if they are not capable of it, there is still a lot of reason for excitement. Eddie Howe has done a really, really strong job since taking over Tyneside, and the owners must be happy with how things are going so far. Now it’s just a matter of seeing if they can maintain it or not.
Tottenham Hotspur were able to defeat Arsenal, and now, against all odds, Antonio Conte knows that one point will definitely be enough for them to return to the Champions League next season. They face Norwich City on the final day Arsenal play Everton, and the grandstand finish we were hoping to see has been somewhat spoiled by Arsenal’s incredible lack of willpower and steel.
