Gary Neville believes Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood would be the best attacking partners for Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United.
After a successful summer transfer window, the Red Devils now have more options up front. Jadon Sancho’s arrival from Borussia Dortmund seemed to be the only addition up front, after a long and determined chase. But in a shock twist last Friday, United appeared on the opportunity to sign Ronaldo again.
The 36-year-old has signed a two-year contract and as a result United let Daniel James sign for Leeds.
But as well as Cavani, Greenwood, Ronaldo and Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have yet to make their mark on the new season.
According to Neville, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær should put Greenwood and Cavani together with Ronaldo.
“I do not think United will have to adapt too much to his arrival,” said the expert Sky Sports News. “They have great forward players, good creative players too, with Jadon Sancho wide, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, they should create plenty of chances for him.
“I love Edinson Cavani, so it’s a question of whether they can play either-or, or could they play both?
“Everyone, including me, expects him to play as number nine, but could he play just to the left of Cavani, with Greenwood or Sancho to the right? That would be a guarantee of goals.
“The performance so far they have really fought in their two away games, but they have a number of players who can go and win a game in an instant. His [Ronaldo’s] Willingness and desire to score goals is better than anyone. ”
Greenwood has shown the best form of any United striker so far this season. He has scored three goals in three Premier League matches.
But Martial and Cavani are still regaining fitness while Sancho started for the first time Sunday’s victory over the Wolves. Rashford is out of injury after a shoulder operation.
Despite the prospect of the quartet getting off to a flying start, Neville doubts whether United have enough to win the title. In fact, Chelsea have signed Romelu Lukaku and signed Saul Niguez, while Manchester City have added Jack Grealish.
Neville doubts Ronaldo and Man Utd
“The big question is whether it is enough to win the title. I do not quite feel that, the Premier League is the strongest it has been since the mid-2000s, “the expert added.
“I think for Manchester United it’s an incredible addition to their team, United needed a center forward, but in terms of his physical aspect, he’s almost 28, 29, 30 when you look at him.
“People will look at a young Cristiano and think how he used to beat five or six players in wide areas, he is now more effective.
“If Cristiano Ronaldo were there eight years ago, he would still be branded a world-class player. His movement in the field, the ability to score goals, the calm in front of the goal and take chances still make him world class – and far from over the hill. ”
Ronaldo broke the men’s international goal record on Wednesday night and thus got a hang of Portugal’s 2-1 World Cup qualifier victory over Ireland to reach 110 strikes for his country.
