RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann insisted the club is not nervous about the future of Dayot Upamecano amid the interest of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed that the Bundesliga and Champions League champions are keeping an eye on Leipzig star central defender Upamecano, with David Alaba set to leave Munich on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Upamecano, who reportedly has a release clause, has also been linked to teams such as Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool following their exploits for last season’s Champions League semi-finalists Leipzig.

Nagelsmann responded to Rummenigge’s comments and was optimistic about the future of the 22-year-old French international, after questioning Bayern’s public approach.

“It is always smart to make the other team nervous, but we are not nervous,” Nagelsmann told reporters before Saturday’s trip to Mainz.

“We know about the Upamecano contract. We know we want to keep him longer and that we like to have him with us.

“You can see it, since he plays every game for us. But we also know the mechanics of football. So if they want to make me or the club nervous, it hasn’t worked.

“But I don’t think that was his main intention. I think they said that to put one foot in the door and make other teams that want to sign him nervous. But you have to ask Mr. Rummenigge why he said what he said. “

Nagelsmann added: “It is quite normal in our business that if a talented young player has a release clause, other teams are interested in him. To what extent does someone have to mention that it is publicly up to them to assess whether it is right or wrong.

“I have nothing against. But if it had been the other way around, they might not have enjoyed it at all. It really doesn’t bother me. As I said, in our business it is quite common. It is part of that. Sometimes it’s just rumors, but sometimes it’s more concrete.

“So it is not a big surprise to me. Dayot Upamecano played a lot lately. I have already clarified that some people tend to forget that they are still very young and have yet to take more steps to continue progressing. But he is clearly capable of taking those steps forward. In fact, he had a couple of unfortunate situations on the way forward. “
