Mourinho dealing in reality

“The position was probably not even his responsibility. But I was proving that the training session was great and I’m ready, which was totally wrong. So when they questioned me I had to give the reality of things.

“I repeat for the last time. Bale was not feeling well. He asked for a scan. I had a scan. The scan showed no injuries, but his feelings were still there. But as coaches, doctors, we can never go against the feelings of the player. So he wasn’t ready for the game. It’s as simple as that.

“If he is ready for tomorrow, he will be selected for tomorrow.”

If Bale is game-ready at The Etihad, the best he can hope for is a seat on the bench.

Mourinho has often preferred Harry Kane’s three forwards, Son Heung-Min and Steven Bergwijn for the biggest games this season.
