Former Manchester City defender turned popular soccer expert Micah Richards has praised two Manchester United players following their impressive 6-2 win against Leeds United.
The Red Devils have recorded six wins in their last seven Premier League games, and are just five points behind Champions Liverpool. In fact, if they won their hand game, they would be just two points behind the Reds.
Richards has rightly pointed out that United still have a lot of work to do, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves credit for hitting his tactics in many important games in his time as United manager.
The former Villa defender watched as United countered Leeds’ high-pressure football while talking to BBC Sport:
“Leeds are a high-energy team, working hard and playing expansive football at the top of the pitch. Many teams see those qualities and think that they will just sit back and wait to hit them on the counter.
Manchester United, however, was different. They left three players on the field, which meant that every time they served the ball it caused them a lot of problems.
Richards has praised Scott McTominay and Dan James. McTominay, who scored two goals in three minutes, added the energy and dynamism needed in the middle of the park.
The BBC expert has hailed James’ performance as “brilliant” as he provided a bit of extra rhythm to United’s attack and helped bring down Leeds.
“I’m sure Solskjaer’s selection raised some eyebrows, with Paul Pogba on the bench, Fred and Scott McTominay in midfield and Daniel James as part of the attack.
“But McTominay was great, giving them the energy and dynamism they needed in midfield, and I thought James was brilliant too. It helped give that extra rhythm to their attack that allowed them to destroy Leeds. “
James has fought through regular matches this season, but had a strong impact against Marcelo Bielsa’s team.
The 23-year-old has led four Premier League starts in the Premier League and scored his first goal of the season last night.
There have been talks in recent weeks that James could be sold in the January transfer window, and that Leeds might be interested. However, after a performance like this, you can expect to play in the next few matches to impress your coach.
