Commentator Paul Merson has claimed that a major Chelsea signing in the summer is “out of reach” and “looks like Mesut Ozil at the moment.”
The Blues They have put their name on the hat of true title contenders this season.
A strong start was tempered by back-to-back losses to Everton and Wolves, but hopes remain high for a sustained title challenge.
A key factor behind its resurgence has come from the new momentum provided by its summer acquisitions.
Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell have transformed Chelsea’s defense, while Timo Werner has contributed goals despite failing to match the heights he reached with RB Leipzig thus far.
However, one player who has struggled to make an impact thus far is Kai havertz.
The former Bayer Leverkusen player arrived for a fee that will increase to £ 71 million, but Merson has not been impressed.
He told the Daily star (via mirror): “Kai Havertz seems Mesut Ozil At the time. A great talent, but when he loses the ball, he doesn’t try to get it back.
“Ozil used to get a main stick because he didn’t always seem interested. But Havertz also looks like that sometimes now.
“It seems like it’s out of reach or you really don’t want to be here. But you have to remember that he is a young player who has come to another country ”.
Merson offers the Havertz solution
Offering a way that Chelsea could start to see the best in their German midfielder, Merson added: “He’s had a difficult time here and when he was sick with Covid, Chelsea really looked better without him,” he added.
“I don’t know why Frank Lampard threw him back on the team because his confidence seems soaring.
“If you spend the amount of money they spent on him, you want more than a utility player, so I’m surprised he played so many positions.”
“I think he’s struggling right now and he needs to come off the bench for some games against tired teams, regain his confidence.”
