Despite previous reports that they were looking to appoint a new foreign head coach, Melaka United of the Malaysian Super League has decided to retain Zainal Abidin Hassan’s service for the 2021 season.
At a press conference on Friday, the association’s vice president, Datuk Wira Yusoff Mahadi, announced that the former Malaysia international has been renewed for one more season.
“Although the team has underperformed somewhat this season, the club still relies on it to improve its performance next year.”
Zainal, 59, has been with Mousedeer since the 2019 season, and in 2020 he only managed to guide them to ninth place.
The appointment of the club’s chief executive, Datuk Saiful Mat Sapri, was also announced as part of the privatization / separation exercise that Malaysian clubs have carried out this season.
Saiful revealed that they are parting ways with former Malaysian star Safiq Rahim, after employing him since 2019 on loan from Johor Darul Ta’zim.
“We have decided not to retain him, and he will be replaced by another well-known experienced player. The attacking player is still receiving calls from the Malaysian national team, and we will decide next week,” Saiful explained.
