Cleveland Brown quarterback Baker Mayfield confirmed Monday night that he needs surgery off-season to repair the torn labrum in his left shoulder that is not throwing out, an injury he has been playing through since Week 2.
With the Browns already eliminated from the playoff battle, Mayfield also did not rule out sitting out Cleveland’s final game next Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, but said he would consult with his agent and family before making that decision.
“I’m an extremely competitive guy,” Mayfield said after Cleveland’s 26-14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football. “Now it’s time for me to start looking at what’s in my and my health’s best interest.”
In another tough outing, Mayfield was fired nine times by the Steelers, who also intercepted him twice. At one point in the first half, Mayfield failed to complete a pass of 10 consecutive throws, the NFL’s longest incompletion streak since 2019, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
Mayfield also became the league’s first quarterback since 2017, being fired at least five times and having five passes knocked down the line in the same match.
“It will not always be beautiful or smooth, but I am a fighter,” he said. “If anyone ever questions how much I want it, just turn on this tape. It was not pretty, but I kept swinging, that’s who I am, and I will keep that. be.”
In addition to the torn labrum, Mayfield has struggled with left foot soreness and a right knee contusion this season. He has also had to have a harness on his left shoulder to prevent it from jumping out of place again.
“I keep putting it out on the line when I’ve not been healthy and tried to fight for our boys,” Mayfield said. “Right now I’m pretty damn good to be honest with you. There’s no way around it. I gave it everything I had tonight.”
Mayfield is under contract at Cleveland through the 2022 season after the Browns exercised the fifth-year option on his rookie contract last season for $ 18.86 million.
