Regardless of what happens in the African youth championship, the goal is to build for the Chinguetti Lions

Mauritania U20 coach Mauril Njoya says his ambition is to help a team that would become an asset to the country’s senior team.

The West African country is host to the 2021 African Cup of Nations U-20 and will kick off its campaign against Cameroon at the Stade Olympique.

Debuting in the biennial African championship, Chinguetti’s Junior Lions are modest about their ambitions, and the strategist who replaced Malian Baye Ba in December 2020 is optimistic his team would give a good account of themselves.

“Our goal is to perform well so that this group continues to grow. We are building a team to become an asset to the senior team, ”said Njoya. Caf website.

This is a team that we have been preparing for three years. I think this is a dream opportunity for Mauritanian footballers and we are preparing for this event in a very good way. Now we ask the entire nation to support these youth players.

“We prepare on two levels. Our technical department studied the players in the national championship and we had our eyes on players abroad in France, Turkey and academies in Senegal. I’m not saying that we are going to win this Afcon U20, but Mauritania will have their word ”.

The Cameroonian also admitted that it was a risk to assume the position of coach less than three months before the start of the tournament.

“Yes, I replaced one of the best coaches on the continent (Baye Ba), but the job of coaching is always linked to some risk,” he continued.

“You can win titles and then get fired. When you coach a team it is always a risk.

“I was hired to continue a job that my predecessor had started three years ago. It is a project that began with the creation of this team that has gone through several tournaments.

“I found a well-prepared team and I must pay tribute to my predecessor Ba, who did a good job. We continue with what he started: building a winning team before the Afcon U20 ”.

After Sunday’s game against the Cubs, they will face Uganda and Mozambique in the remaining Group A games.
