Matthew Stafford was in Comerica Park to mess with Miguel Cabrera for his 3,000. hit.

Super Bowl champion quarterback Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams was in person at Comerica Park to watch Detroit Tigers swallow Miguel Cabrera get his 3,000th career hit.

Prior to this final NFL season, Stafford had spent his entire professional career outside of Georgia playing the Detroit Lions. Although he was destined to be a franchise quarterback since growing up in Highland Park, Texas, Stafford is a baseball fan all the time. He respects the game for the lessons you can apply to life in dealing with failure and overcoming adversity.

Here he is in the Tiger broadcasting booth and talking about the big moment for Detroit baseball.

Matthew Stafford sees Miguel Cabrera reach 3,000 hits in Comerica Park

While Stafford and Cabrera became champions elsewhere, they will always have that Detroit connection to tie them together. For years, they have been ambassadors for everything in Detroit sports. While the city has not had a great chance of it lately on the professional side of things, can Motor City Dan Campbell, Cade Cunningham and The Yzerplan perhaps save this metropolis?

As Cabrera’s famous career clearly unfolds, Stafford has gained another wind in the final third of his by changing NFC affiliation. Although he is nowhere near the first ballot paper Cabrera is, the 30-year-old gunman still has time to build on a football heritage worthy of being shown forever in Canton. Does Stafford get his bronze bust just like Cabrera gets his plaque?

In the end, there are no two athletes in Detroit who have meant as much to the city in the last decade and change than Cabrera and Stafford. Though none of them brought the city a championship, few would ever claim that they were not champions at heart. While they got their rings in Miami and in Los Angeles, it’s hard to think of Detroit spots in the 2010s and not think of those two.

It was great to see Cabrera reach 3,000, and it was even better to have Stafford present.
