Marseille center-back Duje Caleta-Car has confirmed that he had the opportunity to join Liverpool during the recently concluded transfer window.
The 24-year-old On the radar on Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead of the winter transfer deadline with the club desperate to sign some center-backs.
A Caleta-Car deal never materialized in the end, but they managed to sign Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak from Preston North End and Schalke (initial loan) respectively.
In a press conference prior to Marseille’s game against Nice, Caleta-Car confirmed that the Reds were eager to get his signature and it was an honor to hear the interest.
“Today is the Champions League and I am going to watch both games, I received an offer from Liverpool ”, he said at the press conference prior to the game. as cited by GFFN.
“It was an honor for me to know that a club like this loved me. We decided with the club that I was going to stay. Marseille is also a great club and I still have a lot to improve here ”.

The Reds had been keen to sign Caleta-Car before the transfer deadline, but their focus came too late and left Marseille with little time to secure a replacement.
As a result, Caleta-Car remained with the Ligue 1 side and was supposedly devastated for missing out on the English champion.
The Reds may return for their services in the summer and chances are high that they will sign him, given Marseille’s financial concerns.
The Premier League giants are currently without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip with long-lasting injuries that have ruled them out for the season.
Davies and Kabak will appear regularly in the coming months. Their exhibitions can decide if the club needs another center back this summer.
