Manchester City have become the latest club to show interest in Borussia Monchengladbach defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Zakaria joined Borussia Monchengladbach from Young Boys for € 10 million in June 2017. Since then, he has become one of the most sought-after midfielders in the Bundesliga, with 100 games in the last three seasons in all competitions.
The Swiss international has just returned from a long-term knee injury that has kept him out of contention since March, making just one start this season.
The 24-year-old has attracted a lot of attention from several of the best clubs in the world, with Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Chelsea all linked. Man City has already entered the race for the Swiss midfielder, Fabrizio Romano reported on his podcast.
Romano said, quoted by the Daily star: “Manchester City are focusing on Zakaria. He is very appreciated by the board, they are following him, they are in contact with his agent ”.
If Zakaria switched to the Etihad, it might be difficult for him to get regular minutes. Coach Pep Guardiola tends to play only with a defensive midfielder, and already owns Fernandinho and Rodri. However, Fernandinho is now 35 years old and Guardiola tends to rotate his starting eleven often, so he should have his chance.
Bitter rivals Manchester United are also reportedly in the running for the midfielder as they look for an upgrade in Scott McTominay and aging Nemanja Matic. Meanwhile, any potential changes to Chelsea could hinge on their search for the West Ham United man Declan Rice, whom the Blues were looking for in the summer.
At Bayern Munich, an injury to Joshua Kimmich has left Hansi Flick with no defensive midfield options. However, it remains at the top of the Bundesliga and in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
