Manchester United players can feel like they have the opportunity to make this a special season, says Gary Neville.
Paul Pogba hit a volley with 19 minutes remaining on Tuesday to give United a 1-0 away win over Burnley.
That took them to the top of the Premier League, three points ahead of champion Liverpool before the decisive clash of the two teams at Anfield on Sunday.
Former United captain Neville believes Liverpool have an uncomfortable few days ahead and urged Red Devils fans to enjoy their return to the top.
The last time United led at this stage of the season was in 2012-13, Alex Ferguson’s final season to end in title glory.
“I think these players feel like they can have a really special season,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“It’s weird, it changes every week, you don’t know what’s going to happen, there’s an element of unpredictability and Manchester United could exploit that.
“It’s a great victory, reaching the top of the league before Sunday feels like a great moment. Six or eight weeks ago you would not have thought that Manchester United would be anywhere near this position.

“However, now, they find something under construction, the spirit is growing, as you can see from the way they celebrated each other.
“Some performances have not been good all the time away from home, but they have won when they were not at their best. It’s a bit more exciting and I’m going to enjoy these next three or four days!
“I don’t think anybody is saying Manchester United will win the league, but the fact that they are in a title fight, wow! I would never have imagined it.
“It is a strange season. Why shouldn’t Manchester United fans believe? Why shouldn’t I believe this side? Look at the three forwards, that midfield four, Bruno Fernandes: they have fantastic players.
“The other teams are not in good shape. Manchester City are calm and collected, nobody really talks about them, but they are doing very good form and that is a real danger.
“But in the next few days it’s time to have a little fun. They will not be comfortable days for Liverpool ”.
Neville added: “We know very well how quickly this season has changed: it was Chelsea four weeks ago and Man United seemed dead, but everything is changing again.
“It shouldn’t stop Manchester United fans from getting carried away in the days ahead. Why shouldn’t they? It’s been a really difficult few years. ”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted that United are ready for the challenge of taking on Liverpool.
“It’s a brilliant position to be in,” said the United manager.
Of course we know that we are going to the champions who have had an incredible three and a half seasons, we know that it will be a difficult game for us, but we are prepared for it.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better time to play them because we are in good shape, in good shape and hungry. These guys want to improve and that is the proof of their character and quality.
“Of course, we enjoy [top of the league] at any time, whether it’s the first game or the last game, which is a big, big difference. We are looking forward to it, it is a great proof of where we are.
“We are almost halfway through the season so it’s a little indication of where you are, but no one will remember the league standings on January 12.”
