Much of the Gunners’ summer transfer plans could hinge on securing the financial wealth provided by Europe’s elite competition.
Mikel Arteta’s page has been heavily tied to a permanent deal for the stunning Martin Odegaard. However, major acquisitions beyond that may require exits first.
One player who could generate significant funds is Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
The 23-year-old is currently plying his trade with West Brom on loan, though it seems unlikely the Baggies will get over the drop.
Instead of returning to Arsenal and getting lost in the confusion, the Telegraph report ‘this summer is accepted as the natural breaking point ”. The player himself hinted as such with a ‘rot’ mockery in March.
Able to play in midfield or as a winger, Maitland-Niles will be an attractive prospect due to his versatility.
The academy graduate has two years left on his current contract, but the report indicates there are no plans for an extension.
Wolves, Leicester and Southampton are credited with interests, but the most striking name is Man Utd.
Maitland-Niles would prefer to play in midfield, but has apparently realized that most “Premier League clubs see him as a right-back.”
The Red Devils are described as “looking to get stronger” at the position behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the summer.
Wolves were previously linked with a £ 20 million move late to summer window. A fee in that region is expected to be required to end his stint at Arsenal.
A disgruntled Arsenal man weighing up the meeting?
Meanwhile, Reiss Nelson is attracting the interest of Olympiacos amid doubts about his future at Arsenal, according to a report.
Nelson is an Arsenal academy graduate who made his senior debut with the club in 2017. Since then, he has struggled to break through on a regular basis. He spent the 2018-19 season on loan and since then has fought for opportunities at the Emirates Stadium.
Now Nelson may be considering his future again. According to Soccer – London, one option would be to go on loan to Greece.
Olympiacos are showing interest in the youngster, he says. Nelson did not play against them when the two teams recently met in the Europa League, but they have apparently been watching him since last summer.
Having already taken Sokratis Papastathopoulos out of Arsenal’s hands, they could now return with an offer for another of their fringe players. But they just want to borrow Nelson, rather than permanently.
