Registry Leaders Resume Their Domestic Business Against As They Seek To Increase The Gap To The Top Of The PSL Rankings

Mamelodi Sundowns’ bid for a fourth consecutive Premier Soccer League title continues when they host Baroka FC at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday.

Four days after firing Sudanese giants Al Hilal 2-0 at the same place in a Group C match of the Caf Champions League, Masandawana shifts the focus to their league campaign.

They are currently two points behind second-placed SupertSport United, having played one game less than Matsatsantsa.

The victory will see them open a five-point gap at the top and increase their chances for a record fourth consecutive league title.

About 16 points separate the Sundowns from their opponents, who rank 10th on the table.

Squads and team news

Rhulanu Mokwena, Manqoba Mngqithi & Steve Komphela, Mamelodi Sundowns, October 2020

New signing Rushine De Reuck is in line to debut with Masandawana.

After sitting on the bench for the entire match against Al Hilal, the former Maritzburg United star is available for selection in what is a boost for Sundowns’ coaches, who recently cried over a severely weakened defense.

Forward Mauricio Affonso has started light training, but is still far from getting back into shape after groin surgery.

Thoka Matsimela, Baroka FC, November 2020

No Baroka player is suspended for this match and the club has not released an injury update at the time of writing.

But midfielders Joslin Kamatuka and Goodman Mosele were seen fully participating in training on Tuesday just before their departure to Tshwane.

Coach Thoka Matsimela would need all of his key players to be available for this match as they face a team eager to cement their supremacy at PSL.

Match preview

These two teams last met in a PSL game on January 9 with the Sundowns winning 2-0 away at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Lyle Lakay and Themba Zwane scored in the second half to give Masandawana three points on the road.

But before that match, Baroka had threatened to derail Downs’ title bid last season when they beat the Tshwane giants 1-0 in August 2020 on the PSL biobubble.

That was the last time the Tshwane Giants lost a league game and entered Wednesday’s contest enjoying an unbeaten streak in the league this season.

In the last five games of the two teams, Sundowns have won two, while the loot has been shared twice as much as the bio-bubble result.

The Brazilians face a team that has been struggling for consistency this season.

Baroka have recorded just one win in their last five league games in which they have also recorded two losses and as many draws.

They arrive in Tshwane fresh from the elimination of the Nedbank Cup at the hands of the struggling Cape Town Spurs of the First National Division.
