KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After a few days of off-season training, sessions where he fed the ball to many different receivers, Patrick Mahomes was sure to predict another type of offense for the Kansas City Chiefs.
“That’s what you’re going to see with this offense this year,” Mahomes said Thursday. “It will be everyone. It’s not all going to be one guy. Of course [Travis Kelce] will still get a lot of finishes, many yards, but the whole reception room is going to have big days and that could be something we use to our advantage. ”
“It’s a very deep reception space. It’s hard to say which guys should make it because we have so many good recipients. That’s what you want. You want that competition. You want guys who compete every single day to get on the list. because they are going to help us in the end. ”
Mahomes went to either Kelce or wide receiver Tyreek Hill for 45% of his finishes and 50% of his yards and touchdowns in his four years as a starter. But the Chiefs reviewed their receiving squad this year, swapping Hill for the Miami Dolphins, signing free agents JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, signing Skyy Moore in the second round and signing Justyn Ross as an exhausted free agent.
Mahomes gathered many of his receiving teammates in Texas for training and throwing sessions. Most of the Chiefs recipients participated in the four weeks of work.
“I think we got some chemistry in … training with them, throwing with them, we would go to lunch, we would go to dinner, stuff like that,” Mahomes said. “In a way, you build chemistry.
“I think it’s translated. So far in the practice we’ve had, we feel we’re on the same page … and we will continue to build on that.”
Ross went without a draft after missing a season at Clemson due to a congenital spine. But he caught Mahomes’ attention during training this week, especially because of a one-handed grip that the Chiefs posted on their Twitter account.

“You see the talent,” Mahomes said of Ross. “People saw the catch on Twitter. It’s just the way he catches the football out of thin air. I have snatched it. There are no drops. Now it’s about him having to learn the NFL offense.
“The more and more reps he gets, I can only imagine how good he will be because of the talent he possesses.”
