It was an extremely busy transfer window for many Premier League clubs, but Liverpool were largely absent from off-field entertainment, much to the chagrin of some of their fans.

What is the history?

Players like Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United spent astronomical rates in top-notch talent over the summer, while the Reds saw Ibrahima Konate replace a number of fringe players at Anfield.

Many expected Gini Wijnaldum departure to result in an exciting new acquisition that honored England’s 19-time champions throughout 2021/22, however an external successor did not materialize despite multiple star names being linked with a move to Merseyside .

And now, Goal correspondent in Liverpool Neil jones has shed some light on the club’s failed attempt to replace the Dutch international, with one of Konate’s former teammates allegedly targeted.

“It has been reported that the possibility of trading another Leipzig player, Marcel Sabitzer, was explored, but the Austrian ended up signing for Bayern Munich late in the window,” his report reads.

Would Sabitzer have been a good signing?

Yes, definitely!

Yes, definitely!

No way!

Jurgen Klopp will be furious

After finishing a disappointing third place in the top flight rankings last season, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hopes to guide his players back to the top of the Premier League this time.

Seven points of the possible nine has seen the whole of Merseyside start the new campaign solidly, but the German strategist may be concerned about his team’s lack of strength in depth as the season progresses.

The likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Wijnaldum were not replaced, while a below-average duo of Divock Origi and Neco Williams remain the endorsements of key players in key positions.

And Klopp’s disappointment may be further compounded by the fact that the club’s hierarchy was unable to attract an affordable, ready-to-wear replacement in the center of the park.

Sabitzer has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga in recent years, scoring 52 goals and providing 42 assists in 229 appearances for Leipzig, and is thoroughly familiar with the pressure style favored by Klopp after working with Julian Nagelsmann at Red Bull Arena.

With their previous contract expiring next summer, Bayern were able to clinch the Austria international for just € 16 million (£ 13.7 million), a fee even within Liverpool’s limited financial reach.

Klopp is therefore likely to be furious after missing out on the versatile 27-year-old, and will hope that Liverpool’s lack of market activity won’t cost him by his side as the campaign progresses.
