Liverpool added Roma central defender Roger Ibáñez to their list of defensive targets, according to a report.
Defense is a priority area for Liverpool today, after Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez suffered serious injuries. The first-choice matchmaking may not appear until next season.
That leaves Joel Matip, who is also prone to injury, as the only senior center-back among their ranks. Fabinho has taken on a deeper role in providing coverage in recent months, while Jurgen Klopp has also called upon academy graduates such as Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips.
Various figures within the club argue that Liverpool are more likely to stick with those players rather than bring a new face in January.. However, they continue to be linked to a number of possible reinforcements.
The last suggestion, according to ASRomaLiveIbáñez, who has enjoyed rapid promotion in 2020. The Brazilian joined Roma from Atalanta in January, having previously played only twice for his former club.
However, Ibáñez established himself as a key player for Roma after making his debut after blocking. Now he is the regular owner of the club.
The Italian team is already preparing for offers for the 22-year-old. He already has three suitors in the Premier League.
Leicester and Tottenham were interested during the summer transfer window. At the time, Roma wanted at least 30 million euros before considering the sale of Ibáñez.
Now that sale price may have risen even further, to between € 35 million and € 40 million.
PSG will fight with Liverpool
The report adds that Liverpool is not the only team that has joined the race for Ibáñez. Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain are also interested.
Ibáñez is seen by the PSG hierarchy as a possible long-term replacement for fellow Brazilian Thiago Silva. who left the French capital to join Chelsea this summer.
However, PSG is willing to wait until next summer to make its offer. There may be more urgency from Liverpool.
If the Reds go against their public message and enter the transfer market in January, Ibanez could be one of the options they consider.
However, Rome is already planning to extend Ibañez’s contract, which expires in 2023, to defend itself against potential suitors. Therefore, there could be a small window of opportunity for Liverpool to jump.
