The Reds legend believes there is hope of luring a World Cup winner to Anfield, as Jurgen Klopp had probed the Frenchman in the past.
Kylian Mbappé is once again the name on everyone’s lips, following his Champions League hat-trick with Paris Saint-Germain against Barcelona, and Jamie Carragher believes that the winner of the World Cup could be attracted to Liverpool.
The Reds legend is allowing himself to be “a little excited” for a possible move, with Jurgen Klopp having sounded like an exciting French forward in the past.
Carragher acknowledges that a stint at Real Madrid seems destined to figure in Mbappé’s future, but sees Anfield as the “perfect” springboard to the Santiago Bernabéu for the 22-year-old.
What has been said?
Carragher said CBS Sports on the possibility of Mbappé heading to Merseyside: “I’m not kidding, it was based on the fact that Liverpool thought they had a decent chance of getting Mbappé when they were in Monaco. I know that Jurgen Klopp had spoken to him then and I’m sure other clubs had done so at the time.
“When Liverpool were in the Champions League final and they won the Champions League a couple of years ago, I think anyone who sees Liverpool there with Jurgen Klopp and the support of Anfield, if you’re ever going to go to a club in England before you go to Real Madrid.
“I think, guaranteed, he will play for Real Madrid at some point in his career, but I have always felt that Liverpool might be the perfect destination for such a player before taking the next step.”
Carragher added: “It would be Liverpool or Manchester City because they are the two best teams you would see in the Premier League, but there is no doubt on social media, they have brought out a couple of things when Liverpool have been playing at home in the Champions League and we it has everyone a little excited ”.
What has Mbappé said about Liverpool?
In May 2020, Mbappé’s tongue was moved when he praised the efforts of a team seeking their first Premier League title.
He said Mirror: “This season Liverpool have been a machine in the Premier League. They have made winning look easy, but the truth is that it is never easy. Performances like the ones they’ve had don’t just happen. Being as ruthless as they would come from a lot of hard work in training and having a very good manager. “
Klopp has said be in sports when pressed on links to Mbappé and Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho: “Look, I can’t answer those kinds of questions without making headlines the next day, I know that’s what I don’t want to do. I love you all and there are a few more players out there.
“They are all exceptional players. The players who are now because of their own attitude, their skills and all that and I love seeing them, but I have no problem in that I never coached one of them.

Mbappé only has a contract with PSG until the summer of 2022, and an extension has not yet been agreed at the Parc des Princes.
The French international’s impressive hat-trick against Barcelona led him to 111 goals in just 153 appearances for his current employers.
