According to Atlético (subscription required)Liverpool have beaten heated rivals Manchester United signed by defender Stefan Bajcetic from Celta de Vigo.
Athletic reports that the 16-year-old has been hired for a fee of 250,000 euros (£ 224,000), ensuring that the La Liga team is compensated after coaching the talent for seven years, as promised by his agent.
Caoimhe O’Neill adds that the Reds had been searching for Stefan, the son of former Celta Vigo midfielder Srdjan Bajcetic, since late 2019 and they jumped in to beat United to the ace signing.
This comes a week after the reigning Premier League champions signed another under-18 talent at Birmingham City’s Calum Scanlon for around £ 500k.
It is added that Liverpool have been working hard to resolve the transfer, now sealing it before the new transfer regulations as a result of Brexit go into effect tomorrow, New Year’s Day.
Bajcetic, a center-back, has made a couple of appearances for Celta’s youth B team this season.
The report adds that Liverpool took a very comprehensive approach to beating rivals United to the talent signing, working to convince Stefan, the Bajcetic family, their agent and of course Celta de Vigo.
Athletic claim Liverpool were particularly impressed by Bajcetic’s character, and also by Scanlon, with the Merseyside team waiting for the duo to establish themselves before deciding which academy teams they will primarily train with.
250,000 euros is a low cost for a club like Liverpool, which is firmly one of the largest in the world. Bajcetic can be a huge hit for this fee, and they would rather see him be in their ranks than United.
