Celtic hope to build on their win over Hearts in their Scottish Cup win on Sunday. The Hoops achieved a historic ‘triple quadruple’ achievement thanks to their close victory.
But it wasn’t easy for Neil Lennon’s side. Hearts dug into their heels and held them to a thrilling 3-3 draw. It took a penalty shootout win to seal the trophy for Celtic, with pre-shootout goals from Ryan Christie, Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths, according to Couch score.
Should Celtic keep or sell Leigh Griffiths?
The latter made a cameo at Hampden Park, as a substitute in extra time. It only took him eight minutes to find a goal to break the deadlock for his team and he also scored his penalty on the penalty shoot-out.
However, Griffiths has struggled to get regular playing time this season. His appearance against Hearts was only the eighth of the campaign in all competitions, according to Transfer market. He has dramatically slid down the pecking order, with Lennon preferring to place Edouard and Mohamed Elyounoussi in his attack.
This appears to have stemmed from the coach’s fury over Griffiths’s fitness over the summer. According to talkSPORT, Lennon criticized the forward for being “overweight,” expressing his discontent with his player for not being ready to play.
Since then, the 30-year-old has done his best to fight back and show the coach that he is worthy of a spot in the starting lineup. In fact, he has contributed some influential performances against players like St Johnstone and Aberdeen and should be relied on more often.
Alex McLeish recently got lyrical about Griffiths, labeling him a “Tremendous” active on this Celtic side. He would be a smart choice to start in his next outing against Ross County and he has definitely earned himself a spot in the lineup after his heroics in the Scottish Cup final.
