FORT WORTH, Texas – The New Orleans Saints’ dominant victory in Week 1 over the Green Bay Packers did not come without a price.
Seven Saints players missed Wednesday’s training session with injuries – including Pro Bowl corner kicker Marshon Lattimore, who underwent surgery on his thumb this week, according to a source.
There was also a lack of starting center Erik McCoy (calf), starting defensive end Marcus Davenport (shoulder), starting linebacker Kwon Alexander (elbow), reserve defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon (calf), reserve LB Pete Werner (back thigh) and reserve safety PJ Williams (back) . Backup quarterback Trevor Siemian missed training due to illness.
No schedule was specified for any of the players on this list. However, the NFL Network reported that both McCoy and Davenport are expected to miss games. The Saints signed veteran center Austin Reiter to their training team on Wednesday, and quarterback Jameis Winston spoke as if McCoy will miss some time.
“We’re going to miss Erik,” Winston said of the excellent third-year center who left during New Orleans’ opening drive on Sunday. “His command and the way he did things beforehand was phenomenal. But I know how much he loves football he’s going to be in. [replacement Cesar Ruiz’s] ear, and Cesar will do an excellent job for us in that position. “
Ruiz, who was the first round of the saints in the draft election in 2020, played center in Michigan before switching to guard with the Saints.
“Last year, Cesar and I worked so much together when he played center,” Winston said. “I think it really helps. We have a good relationship. I know how he likes to communicate; he knows how I like to communicate. So it worked a bit to our advantage that we had a lot of reps last years and we can pick it up. “
The Saints also have some good replacement options for Lattimore. They switched to Houston Texans veteran starter Bradley Roby last week – and Roby is now eligible to make his New Orleans debut after serving a suspension in Week 1. Rookie’s third-round draft pick Paulson Adebo also proved capable as starting corner kick in week 1 as I have intercepted Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
The Saints are also still without star receiver Michael Thomas until at least week 7 due to an ankle injury and an excellent defensive tackle David Onyemata until week 8 due to, among other things, a suspension.
But defensive end Cameron Jordan spoke with confidence on Wednesday about the defense’s ability to adapt to the players they replaced this offseason and those who were possibly out of line due to injuries.
“It doesn’t matter who’s involved, it’s about the mentality we take the field with,” Jordan said. “So hopefully there will never be a drop-off.”
