Frank Lampard felt a key change in the second half made the difference when Chelsea beat West Ham 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on Monday Night Football.
Tammy Abraham scored twice as Chelsea ended their recent mini-losing streak beat the hammers to climb to fifth place on the table.
Back-to-back losses had dropped the Blues in the table, but they made a perfect start against their London rivals when Thiago Silva headed in in the 10th minute.
Timo Werner turned down a couple of good opportunities to increase the hosts’ lead, but played his part in the second 12 minutes left for his team as Abraham converted his weak shot.
The Chelsea striker, back on the wing in place of Olivier Giroud, then scored another just two minutes later when he was in the right place to sweep home from a tight angle after Christian Pulisic missed a simple header from a cross.
The scoreboard flattered Chelsea something but that did not bother Lampard too much, with Mateo Kovavic demonstrating a key addition from the bench in the second half.
He said BBC Sport: “It was good to see that at the end because we had a 1-0 period where it was difficult, we handled it well. Once we got the second goal, Kovacic came in and got us onto the pitch and we could have had more goals at the end.
Werner doing the right things
“That is the period that Timo (Werner) is in, it is unfortunate, but he is putting himself in the positions, when a (goal) comes in, it will be a career for him. Tammy (Abraham) and Oli (Giroud) bring different things, Tammy did her thing today and that’s what we needed.
“West Ham are a good team in good shape, so many threats, I thought today would be a difficult match and it proved to be, even in the not beautiful moments that we defended superbly. Thiago Silva did it brilliantly.
“We went down a bit and it was important that we come back tonight, there were many things for the team to show its character, we want more.
“Christmas has changed for everyone this year, for the boys we just have to prepare for Arsenal, it is a very busy time for us.”
