Ronald Koeman revealed after the game how Riqui Puig took responsibility for executing Barcelona’s fifth penalty against Real Sociedad tonight.
Koeman has come under scrutiny so far this season for his unwillingness to use Puig, considered one of Barça’s brightest young talents. While Ansu Fati, before his injury, and Pedri had the opportunity to shine, Puig had to watch from the side.
Luckily for Koeman and Barcelona, Puig was on the pitch tonight when his Spanish Super Cup clash with La Real went to penalties, though it was only as a substitute.
It was he who took the fifth and final penalty from Barcelona, knowing that if he found the back of the net, they would progress. As if ice were running through his veins, he beat the goalkeeper.
Speaking after the match, Koeman offered insight into how Puig stepped up and took responsibility for taking what would be a potentially decisive fifth penalty. Barcelona fans will love it!
Koeman: “I had four names on my paper and I said ‘who gets the fifth?’ And Riqui said ‘I’ll take it’. Perfect. “
