Frank Leboeuf has told Jurgen Klopp to stop making “excuses” after the Liverpool manager pointed to Manchester United’s penalty count.
Klopp admitted he was angry after Monday’s 1-0 loss to Southampton in which Sadio Mane was denied two penalties.
After the match, which ended unbeaten in 12 matches, a Klopp showed his anger.
“Manchester United had more penalties in two years than I have in five and a half years,” Klopp said. “I have no idea if it’s my fault or how it can happen.”
But the former France and Chelsea defender said ESPN that the German needs to focus on his own team and stop with the “excuses”.
“I am very fond of Mr. Klopp, I don’t understand what he’s trying to do,” the 52-year-old said. ESPN.
“You don’t need to look for excuses. This season is a big mess.
“I don’t know what it is going to mean to be a Premier League champion this season because of all the things we see and all the things we are going through.
“Because of the penalty shoot-out excuses, I played from 1996 to 2001 for Chelsea and I kept hearing that Manchester United had more penalties than anyone, so it’s a long story.
“But I don’t think Manchester United got all those trophies on penalty kicks more than others.
“So don’t go there. Don’t go looking for something special. Everyone is doing it wrong and suddenly they are doing very well and they will go back to being bad or average, it is what this season is.
“Liverpool is fighting due to injuries, due to the pandemic due to the fatigue of some players, just go! Don’t try to find anything else.
“It is not Mr. Klopp. Mr. Klopp has overcome that. “
Solskjaer worthy in reply
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer responded to Klopp’s comments ahead of the Carabao Cup semi-final with Man City.
The United manager laughed.
“And that’s a fact, probably,” he said. “That is probably my answer, it is a fact that we have more than them.
“But maybe they should… well, we’ve had… I don’t know how many penalties they’ve had. I don’t count how many penalties they have.
“So if you want to spend time worrying about when we get fouled in the area, then I don’t spend time on that.”
