Kansas City adds to running games in the wake of the Tyreek Hill deal

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed running back Ronald Jones in the wake of swapping Tyreek Hill for the Miami Dolphins.

Brett Veach’s plan to create a more complete offensive after trading with Hill has begun to come into focus. First, Chiefs signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling, formerly of the Green Bay Packers, as a deep threat. Now, KC has added their running game behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire, signing former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Ronald Jones.

Jones was ironically a member of the Bucs team that defeated the Chiefs in the Super Bowl in 2020. He will likely fall in as No. 2 behind Edwards-Helaire in Kansas City’s backfield.

With his mere 24 years, Jones still has plenty of room to grow as a running back. He played a crucial role in the Tampa Bay Super Bowl march in 2020, where he rushed 978 yards and caught 28 balls in 165 yards.

Kansas City Chiefs sign Ronald Jones

Jones struggles with pass protection and has some fumble issues, so those are things Reid, Eric Bieniemy and Chiefs will definitely work on his with. But the 24-year-old’s explosiveness in the hinterland more than outweighs it.

At his best, Jones has 4.4 speed and can play in the running and passing game. He had two seasons with over 1,000 all-purpose yards with the Chiefs, and should have ample opportunity in Kansas City. Edwards-Helaire does not necessarily have a stranglehold on the running back position.

Adding Jones will not completely compensate for the loss of Hill, but in the end, those pieces can make a difference.
