Former Liverpool defender turned popular pundit Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United need to look for a first-class forward to increase their chances of competing for the Premier League title.
The Red Devils have had a good season and are currently second in the standings with 50 points on the board. However, they are already 12 points behind runaway leader Manchester City and there is a drastic difference in the quality of both teams.
Speaking in Monday night football, Carragher emphasized that United need to look for a quality forward, who can take them to the next level and make them true title contenders.
He added that Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland are potential candidates United should consider during this summer’s transfer window.
He said: “I think Manchester United have a quality problem. When the ball really goes up to the front players, is there enough quality there? “
“They are the top scorers in the Premier League, but do they have that player who can score goals in decisive matches and lead them to the league title?
“People talk about United needing a right winger, and they need one, but they need more of a center forward.
“If United had Marcus Rashford on the left, a new center forward, and Mason Greenwood complementing a new right back, that would fix the lack of quality.
“You look at the options. In this country it is Harry Kane, or Erling Haaland, who is getting ahead. You wonder if they are players Manchester United should be targeting. “
Sports lens view:
Anthony Martial seemed like the solution for United early on after an impressive 2019/2020 campaign in which he scored 23 goals and 17 in the league.
However, he has struggled to replicate the demonstration from this period, and has scored only seven times to date with only four of them in the league.
Edinson Cavani has been a quality signing for United and recently scored three times in six top flight appearances before his calf injury.
The Uruguayan still has to be a short-term solution and he needs a young forward, who can consistently score goals and leave a mark in big games.
Both Kane and Haaland may be available on the transfer market this summer, but they could cost more than £ 100 million to either side.
United have shown a particular reluctance to spend too much during the 12 months that ruined their chances of landing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund last summer.
If that’s the case later this year, they may have to go for an alternative and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Andre Silva could be one of the players to consider.
It has already been reported that United is keeping an eye on him and that he could be available for around £ 26 million when the transfer window reopens.
Silva has scored 20 goals in all competitions for Frankfurt this season. The club is currently fourth in the German top flight.
In other news, a Bundesliga forward has said he is aware of rumors linking him to Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
