Jamie Carragher has said he thinks Manchester United under Ralf Rangnick is similar to Liverpool during Roy Hodgson’s short reign.

The Red Devils face more control after a somewhat overwhelming start to life under their interim manager. While the results have improved, some observers have criticized the performance.

United could easily have lost Monday’s FA Cup match in the third round against Aston Villa. In fact, the visitors conceded two goals in the second half.

Before then, however, Newcastle were unlucky not to take all three points and settled for a draw. Norwich were the same and only Wolves have inflicted a defeat on Rangnick so far.

Reports have claimed that the United players are struggling to adapt to German tactics. The 63-year-old has created his name with an urgent playing style, and he influenced Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.

However, former Liverpool defender Carragher has blasted Rangnick’s reign so far. In fact, he compared it to Hodgson’s time in Liverpool. The Englishman replaced Rafael Benitez in 2010, but reached only 31 games before being sacked.

“What may worry United fans now is when they see their team in the last few weeks, they remind me of Liverpool under Roy Hodgson,” Carragher wrote in a column for The Telegraph.

“There is nothing about them; our passion, our emotions; each game seems flat; they lack energy and fluidity; the players clearly do not enjoy their football.

Rangnick under pressure from Man Utd

“There is a highly respected football figure at the helm, but it has taken a few weeks to make it clear that Ralf Rangnick is not the right fit for that team and will not be on the sidelines at the start of next season.”

In fact, Rangnick is only a temporary option for the Red Devils, as they are looking for a long-term successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

But as well as Rangnick, United players have been criticized for their body language under the manager.

Marcus Rashford faced flak after the victory over Villa. Meanwhile, Gary recently noticed Neville Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernande’s “whingebags”.

Carragher strikes Man Utd stars

Carrager said: “Everyone in football knows how Rangnick will play when he was christened ‘the godfather of repression’. So why is that not happening?

“It can only be because the players are either unable or unwilling to follow his instructions.

“It curses them as much as the coach who can not see a way to put his plan A into practice.”

The expert added: “This criticism is deserved, because when you look at the talent available in the United squad, they should play a more entertaining and energetic football brand.”

Man Utd return to match on Saturday against Villa in the Premier League.
