Rio Ferdinand has cast doubt on Harry Maguire’s long-term future at Manchester United, as he lacks a key ingredient essential to a modern defender.

Maguire, 28, is currently in his third season at Old Trafford after moving from Leicester in the summer of 2019. The Red Devils paid around £ 80 million for the Sheffield-born ace. And they’ve got their money’s worth, with the former Hull City stopper playing every minute of United’s 2019-2020 league campaign.

He started 34 times in the top match last period and has been seen 22 times in 2021-2022. But his struggling at times this season has reflected the team.

Ralf Rangnick’s team could become number four in the Premier League standings. But they have worked on just 13 wins from 27 matches and are fighting for a top-4 ranking.

Maguire’s recent exhibitions have been examined by experts. And he was dropped on the bench as United drew 0-0 with battling Watford on Saturday.

Next up is the Manchester derby on Saturday as United travel to the Etihad Stadium. It remains to be seen whether Rangnick will start Maguire or Victor Lindelof.

And for Ferdinand, there are many questions to be answered regarding the English center-back.

“Should Maguire enable you to win the league, that’s the question,” he continued Vibe with five, according to The Mirror. “Because what with someone like Ralf and all the top teams now, when they play now, they play on the front foot. They are aggressive and want to win the ball high.

“So that’s why you need defenders who can defend on the halfway line. One-v-one, two-v-two – or three against two, if you need that security.”

Maguire negatives outweigh positives for Ferdinand

Ferdinand knows a thing or two about defending, after adorning the Old Trafford rear guard for many years. And he’s not sure if Maguire has the ability to function that his manager would like.

“If you can play two-on-two one-on-one or on the halfway line, it enables you to have more bodies on the opponent’s half of the court. Therefore, keep it to win the ball early and be closer to the opponent’s goal to score goals, ”he added.

“Liverpool are doing extremely well, City are also doing really, really well, Bayern [Munich] shall; three of the best teams on the planet. Everyone goes that way of playing football, Ralf Rangnick’s football style is like that.

“Can Maguire do it, can you do it with Maguire? That’s my problem, that’s my problem.”

Maguire has been praised for his tactical awareness and abilities on the ball. However, Ferdinand has questioned whether it is now enough for him to live with the rate of opposition strikes.

“If I’m a center-forward, if I’m one of the fast center-forwards or fast-winger, fast strikers, I would be stuck where Harry Maguire is,” he continued.

“For all the good qualities he has in his game, it’s a big weakness in his game. And it’s a fundamental for all the top teams to be able to play one-on-one on the halfway line.

“So I think for Maguire, in the long run – unless he can find the extra yard of pace – it might be difficult for him.”
