Mikel Arteta has revealed his belief that there is nothing unfair in the criticism that Arsenal’s summer signing Willian has faced, as reported by the guardian.
Willian was an excellent servant to Chelsea, but since the Blues had a policy of offering only short-term deals to players over 30, his time at Stamford Bridge came to an end in the summer.
In what turned out to be a surprise to all, Willian put pen to paper with London rivals Arsenal. Unfortunately for him and the Gunners, this season has been a disaster so far.
Willian has a great reputation, so Arsenal fans will have expected more than he has contributed to date. Manager Mikel Arteta, quoted by The Guardian, insisted that it is not unreasonable to do so:
“I’m not saying it’s unfair because expectations are very high in terms of the goals he can score, the assists he can create.”
“You expect him to be in the starting lineup, so it’s normal for people to write things about him.”
“What he is doing, the way he trains, the way he works and the way he is pushing to give everything in the team, is what I demand. Whether you are more or less successful in the game is another matter. It will come, with the quality it has ”.
Whether there will be a future for Willian at the Emirates remains to be seen, but unless there is a major resurgence in their form between now and the end of the season, it would not be unwise for them to cash in on the summer.
