Watford winger Ismaila Sarr’s agent has said a January transfer to Liverpool was not finalized at the last minute due to financial issues.
The 22-year-old Sarr has long waited to return to the Premier League since Watford’s relegation at the end of the 2019/20 season.
The Senegal star scored five times and posted four assists in his first season in England’s top flight, with his pace and wiles despite the Hornets’ struggles.
Two of their five Premier League goals came in a stunning 3-0 win over Liverpool in February, while the 2019/20 champions were clearly impressed by what they witnessed. Since then, many reports have claimed that Sarr is on the Anfield club’s transfer target list.
While the Reds did eventually sign Diogo Jota in place of Sarr over the summer, the Watford star’s agent Thierno Seydi has claimed that Liverpool actually returned to make an offer for their client ‘in the last few days’, presumably , referring to the January transfer window.
Talking to Panafricanfootball.comSeydi said talks were so far along on a 40 million euro (35 million pound) deal that he even asked his compatriot and friend Sadio Mane to help him find a place to live in Sarr.
“With Liverpool, a few days ago, we were at the stage of signing the contract to link the Reds with Ismaîla Sarr,” Seydi is quoted as saying. “Everything was established, the monthly salary and the duration of the contract. I even asked Sadio Mané to find a flat for him. But in the end, the English club could not put 40 million euros on the table to finalize this agreement.”
Seydi also claimed that Manchester City made a loan move for Sarr last summer, which was rejected for the lack of a purchase obligation clause.
This season, Sarr has five goals and two assists in 24 Championship outings, and the Hornets currently rank fourth in the Championship table.
