Exclusive – Inter will start talks with star forward Romelu Lukaku about a new contract to secure his future at the San Siro amid interest from rival clubs, including Juventus.
Lukaku has resurrected his Milan career after his spell at Manchester United soured and he scored more than 30 goals in a season for the first time in 2019/20. His final tally was 34, with the last coming in Inter’s first appearance in a European final in 10 years.
So far this season, the Belgian international has scored 11 goals in 12 games in all competitions, meaning he has already surpassed his United goal count in more than 30 fewer games.
90min has learned that Inter are willing to make sure Lukaku cannot be fooled and wants to start talking about tying him to a new contract, even though his current contract still has another three and a half years left until the summer of 2024
Serie A rivals Juventus are among the clubs believed to be showing interest in Lukaku, while there is also some interest in the Premier League, where he spent eight years until 2019.
To reassure Inter, Lukaku is happy with the Nerazzurri and is not looking to move on.
A source said of the situation: “Romelu loves Inter, he knew he would do well in Serie A and is in no rush to leave, despite knowing that his form will attract interest.”
One of the main aspects of his success in Milan has been a strong relationship on the field with Lautaro Martínez. The Argentine has been a target for Barcelona for the past year and Inter have been in talks about a new contract with him, although it seems increasingly likely that he will leave in 2021.
That only strengthens the club’s determination to keep Lukaku long-term.
