Arsenal center-back Rob Holding has signed a new three-year deal with the North London giants, with an option for one more year.

The 25-year-old came very close to signing on loan from Newcastle United in the summerBut the move failed and he has since established himself as a key player under coach Mikel Arteta.

Holding has made 17 appearances in all competitions in 2020-21 and will now look to continue to prove himself to get the attention of England coach Gareth Southgate.

The Gunners defender joined the club from Bolton Wanderers in July 2016, made 96 appearances and won two FA Cups, and he definitely deserves the new contract.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright is pleased with the development, reacting to the announcement on Twitter as follows:

Some at Arsenal wanted Holding to drop Emirates on loan for the summer so they could play more regularly, but Arteta stepped in and that decision is starting to pay off.

Arsenal manager Edu and the Spaniard see the central defender as one of their emerging leaders and an important part of the club’s future, and will be eager to reward their confidence in him in the future.

Former Gunners boss Arsene Wenger signed with Holding after being impressed with the scouting reports he received about the Englishman, and He was quick to praise him after a show of command in a goalless draw against Leicester City in August 2016.

The center-back joined Arsenal for just £ 2 million, and he’s beginning to prove himself a crafty signing despite sustaining a knee injury that threatened to derail his career in December 2018.
