In exclusive remarks to Football FanCast, Dean Windass has opened up to the possibility of Leeds United signing Phil Jones from Manchester United.
Currently, the Whites have a very drained defense that was only compounded by an injury to Liam Cooper on Sunday night.
Heading into their clash with Man United last weekend, they were already without Robin Koch and Diego Llorente, making Cooper the only fit senior central defender in the entire team.
The length of his period on the sidelines is unknown, but it could be a chance for players like Pascal Struijk to impress for a few weeks.
Of course, the January transfer window is now in a matter of weeks and Leeds could seek to resolve its defensive crisis by exploiting the market.
Should Leeds sign Phil Jones?
And one player they might be looking to move for is England defender Phil Jones. When asked about the possibility when speaking with FFC, Windass was not overly convinced. He said:
“IN Do not do think lake. IN think he is other one nOh coming thaw the what of his career. you to know, IN think the short finished you may obtain younger center backs outside there now. Leeds tot the back needs rhythm, spirit Phil Jones now ice coming thaw the what of his career “.
“Side point, him with Liam Cooper. Yes, with experience, but now you need rhythm in the Premier League. And I’m not saying Phil Jones is slow, but he’s reaching the wrong end of his career. So he could be wrong, they could try to sign him. ”
Leeds has been linked with Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori on loan, but Jones could be a longer-term solution for Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta.
Jones’s contract doesn’t expire until 2023 and even then, United has the option for one more year. However, considering he hasn’t played the entire season, the starting gate is sure to beckon him.
Having played 200 In Premier League matches, he is certainly what they are looking for in terms of experience, but his injury record is not the best. He has collected 18 separate issues from the writing of terms at Old Trafford.
Orta needs to consider this one carefully.
And in other news, Leeds could have their NEW Ben White if Orta takes a nosedive for “great talent” …
