Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski was named FIFA’s Best Male Player for 2020, fending off competition from finalists Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to seal the award.

It is an award that means a lot to any player as he is voted on by other players, coaches and journalists, but because he uses that method there is always the potential for some … intriguing votes.

FIFA They’ve posted the full voting breakdown, so let’s take a look at some of the more notable options.

1st: Neymar
2nd: Kylian Mbappé
3rd: Robert Lewandowski

Messi obviously couldn’t vote for himself, but what stands out from the Argentine captain’s votes is the absence of Ronaldo.

Lewandowski only squeezes a third, behind PSG duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.

1st: Sadio Mane
2nd: Lionel Messi
3rd: Neymar

Messi will surely have believed that he could count on the support of Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni, but no.

Scaloni only put Messi in second place, using his highest vote to select Sadio Mane.

2nd: Sergio Ramos
3rd: Mohamed Salah

Another of those who doesn’t love Ronaldo is former Real Madrid teammate Modric, who instead opted for Sergio Ramos and Mohamed Salah to form his top three.

Bouquets he himself also moved away from Ronaldo, instead opting for Lewandowski, Thiago Alcantara and Neymar.

1st: Robert Lewandowski
2nd: Kevin De Bruyne
3rd: Thiago Alcantara

Bayern manager Hansi Flick recently revealed (via the Bundesliga) that everyone on the team wanted Lewandowski to win, and that was made clear by the votes of Germany’s captain Neuer.

Lewandowski sat on top and former Bayern player Thiago Alcántara even made it to the podium, with Messi and Ronaldo nowhere to be found. Was someone playing?

2nd: Sadio Mane
3rd: Kevin De Bruyne

Well about your teammate Kevin De Bruyne? Clumsy.

Virgil van Dijk

1st: Sadio Mane
2nd: Mohamed Salah
3rd: Thiago Alcantara

Van Dijk here, not even trying to hide his predilection for Liverpool. He was one of 47 players who couldn’t find a place for eventual winner Lewandowski on their votes.

It was a similar midfielder vibe Near Keita, who opted for Lewandowski, Mane and Salah as his first three.

1st: Thiago Alcantara
2nd: Neymar
3rd: Kevin De Bruyne

Lewandowski was not allowed to vote for himself, and it seems he decided that he would not show any love for Messi or Ronaldo either.

He strayed quite a bit from his true competitors, opting instead to be one of three players to put Thiago on top.

Cristiano Ronaldo

1st: Robert Lewandowski
2nd: Lionel Messi
3rd: Kylian Mbappé

Fair play for Ronaldo, who seems like one of the few players really trying to vote fairly this year … probably because he knew he was never going to win anyway.

1st: Robert Lewandowski
2nd: Not counted
3rd: Sadio Mane

Not counting?

Ethiopia’s captain, Kebede, was right about Lewandowski, but who was his number two? I need to know!

Was it so stupid that FIFA couldn’t justify its inclusion in the breakdown? Was a player invented? Did you try to sneak Danny Drinkwater in there and act like no one notices?
